Mix Pet Of The Week

Hello Again!  It's time for another Mix Pet Of The Week at a look at some of the latest at Butte Humane Society who are looking for that special family to take them home!

Hi!  My name is Elsie!

5 years

Female

Domestic Medium Hair/Mix

Brown/White

I am a gorgeous 5 year old lady. I am a very sweet, loving, and mellow cat looking for my fur-ever family. I'm a rare cat because I actually like my tummy rubbed! Looking for a laid-back but adorable cat to spend your time with? Then I might be the girl for you! I lived in a household with another cat so I think I could get along with other cats as long as they respect my space. Please come and meet me at the Cat Adoptions Center today!

We'll hello there! I'm Violet! Happy to meet you!

3 years

Female

Terrier, American Pit Bull/Mix

White/Blue

I'm as sweet as a peach and as lovely as a flower! At times I'm energetic and

playful, but generally I am a mellow lady. I'm very loving and give lots of kisses. I know some basic commands, but I hope my new owner will train me to do more! I can probably go to a home with another dog, I'm just a little unsure of dogs at this point, so I'll need another dog who is kind and patient with me. Older children would be okay with me too! If you're looking to add a little light to your life, please come down and meet me at the dog adoptions center  at 2579 Fair St.

New Additions to Webster's Dictionary

It's that time of year again when we find out about the new words that the folks at Merriam-Webster's deem worthy of adding to the world's most used dictionary.

This year, the folks at Webster's have added 850 new words and definitions to the national lexicon.  Some of the highlights of this year's additions.......

DUMPSTER FIRE:  This one has been used quite often since 2008, mainly as a colorful description of poorly performing athletes and/or sports teams.  Webster's newly added and official definition:  "an utterly calamitous or mismanaged situation or occurrence"

WORDIE:  "A lover of words."   Now foodie has a baby brother in the big book!

MANSPLAIN:  "To explain something to a woman in a condescending manner that assumes she has no knowledge of the topic."   Guys. we'll just say be VERY careful how you use this one and leave it at that.

And finally.......

GLAMPING:  "The act of outdoor camping with amenities and comforts."     And it goes without saying, if you have ever gone camping with an RV, that indeed makes you a "glamper"  and probably a pretty good candidate for the lead role in the next National Lampoon Family Vacation remake.

If you want to know more about the other 846 news word that have been added to the dictionary, click and check out the WORDS AT PLAY COLUMN at Webster's website.

Road Info and Chain Controls

The current storm system making it's way through Northern California has made driving conditions dangerous at best. Chain controls are currently up for most, if not all, mountain roadways including 5, 32, 36, 49, 70, 299, and the upper Skyway.  Here's a quick look at where the plows are out and chain controls are in effect via the Quickmaps app from CalTrans.

The Quickmaps app from CalTrans is available through your app store and online at http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/   On this app you have options to see where the chain controls and snow plows are according to the latest CalTrans information. You also can get travel related information  including CHP incidents, hard road closures, and C/T road cameras and message boards.

There are also some school closures and  power outages  related to the current storm.

Berry Creek Elementary is closed today due to a power outage and will be closed on Friday for a snow day.

There are also a few weather related power outages as well.

Approx 800 PG&E customers near Lake Oroville are without power this morning. That outage stretches from Forbestown Road in southern Butte County to the Berry Creek  area.

According to PG& E there are several smaller isolated outages scattered around the Chico urban area as well as Corning, Orland, and Gridley.

978 customers are also without power in the Yuba City area.  PG&E says both outages are weather related.

To get the latest power outage info from PG&E  or to report an outage click here.  To report downed power lines, you can call 1-800-743-5000.

More information posted on our Facebook page. Click here to check that out.
